11. The Final Cut

9. In the Cage
12 May, 2015Without realizing, I started another overkill in my life, again with no awareness. During the time I sold my stuff, I started putting my CDs and concert DVDs in the external memory of my computer. First, my own and then the collections of my friends from my town and other cities.
In Barcelona, Alex and his wonderful girlfriend (happily married today) put up with me for almost a whole month. During this time I was putting CDs in the external memory of my computer like crazy. I copied half of Alex’s records, all progressive rock. I had never worked so much in my whole life. 12 hours per day during almost 30 days in a row. Amazing! Thanks so much to both of you.
Today I have a digital collection of around 20,000 records more or less. 80% of progressive music in its different variations: zeuhl, classic prog from the 70s, Rio, neo-prog, krautrock, space rock. Besides this, I have 700 King Crimson records, 200 Tangerine Dream ones and around 1,500 DVDs, mostly of concerts.
Man is the only animal that trips twice over the same stone. Again, I was at the same point: overkill. I hadn’t learned anything.
Luckily I can comfort myself thinking that others are worse. Not too long ago, in Madrid they introduced me to a guy who had a collection of 70,000 vinyls including 5,000 of The Beatles and 3,000 by Elvis Presley. The guy was a very normal person. When I was young, that guy would have been my idol. Now I just think we are a bit lost.
Do you honestly think that this guy wakes up one morning and feels like listening to the Thai edition of Sergeant Peppers of the Beatles?
