2. Indiscipline
18 November, 2015
Hi everyone!
18 December, 2015My friend Sigfrid was the one who introduced me to progressive rock during my teenage years. I promptly got hooked on it and started buying vinyl LPs like crazy. I was hungry for music and hungry for discovering new things. I always wanted more. This buzz lasted for 5 years until it was rudely interrupted by my having to enlist for the military service. Although, as we will see later on, this wasn’t all so bad.
It was really hard to listen to music while doing military service. We were only allowed to listen to music once in a while and with headphones. I remember I had a Walkman with a K7 tape on it. On one side “H to He” and on the other “Pawn hearts”. Bad luck came my way and I was locked in the guardroom cell for a month. Luckily, I was able to take my Walkman with me, the tape and some batteries. So, you can imagine … I spent a whole month listening to these two masterpieces and each time I listened to them I liked them better. Incredible! When I got out, a part from having the songs stuck in my head, all I could think of was of getting every single album by the VDGG and Peter Hamill. Even today, 25 years later, I could hum these two records by heart from start to finish. They are in my unconscious mind. This experience was a key aspect of my life: not the fact that I did the military service, but the fact that I listened to VDGG in the guardroom cell. I had just discovered one of my three favorite groups!
